The syllabus for the 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training Course (Multi-Style) will be Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga, Meditation Techniques, Art of Teaching Yoga, Anatomy and Philosophy

Traditional Hatha Yoga – The basis of all contemporary

ASANA PRACTICE

  • Our teaching methods are according to the tradition of gorakhanath and svatmaram.
  • Asana practice is based on three principles, which are, balance, awareness and stability.
  • The sequence of traditional yoga is dependent on the cosmic order.
  • Students here will be learning various groups of asana, which will consist of inversion, supine, prone, sitting, standing, balancing.
  • For traditional hatha, students will avoid all kinds of outside assistance, enabling them to realize their own true strengths and limitations.
  • The objective is to find stability, awareness and balance through a proper understanding of hatha yoga.

CHANTING

  • Through chanting the mantras, one can reach their hearts.
  • “Mantra”, the word, was derived from the words “Man”, meaning heart, and “atra”, meaning transcends.
  • Mantra has the ability to transcend the mind or the heart.
  • Through chanting, one will learn and understand the various mantras and their effect on a subtle, as well as physical level.
  • The aim is to learn various mantras and their effect on spirituality.

BASIS OF PRANAMAYA

  • We will learn the most inevitable part of yoga here, the various breathing techniques, including kapalbhati, bhastrika,anulomvilom, sitali, sitkati, bhramari and Ujjayi.
  • The aim of pranayama is to rejuvenate the body and develop the spirituality, the ultimate aim being, to awaken the power of Kundli.
  • Over here, one will learn the various techniques of pranayama as well as their benefits, limitation, and contra- indication

CLEANING PROCESS

  • This yogic technique is used for internal cleansing and purification.
  • One learns and practices simple cleansing techniques like jalaneti, rubber neti. agnisara. and eye cleansing.
  • Advanced techniques like danda dhauti, vastra dhauti and nauli will also be demonstrated.
  • Through this, one understands the importance of purification and cleanses the body.

YOG NINDRA

  • This yoga technique is a beautiful way to relax your mind and body. Only when both, body and mind calm down, are we able to connect with our soul.
  • Yoganidra is the way to attain conscious, subconscious and unconscious desires.
  • Yoganidra enables one to understand the importance of deep relaxation and even experience it.

CONCEPT OF THERAPEUTIC YOGA

  • Students will be introduced to the various aids which improve the anatomical alignment of the body. They will learn the usage of props like belt, block and hanging rope. They will also learn using this aid for therapeutic benefits.

ART OF ADJUSTMENTS

Vinyasa Yoga – Ashtanga-Vinyasa Series

UNDERSTANDING THE SEQUENCE

  • The sequence flow follows the themes, but the chosen theme can be directed through a particular sequence, that is, mediation, intention, warm up, sun salutation, standing, balancing, sitting, supine, inversion and shavasana.
  • This helps in understanding the importance of sequence.

ART OF THEME

  • Art of theme is the centre of vinyasa yoga.
  • Students learn different themes of vinyasa like heartopening, balancing the chakras, hip opening and strengthening the back.
  • The various themes are based upon different intentions that one keeps in mind throughout the practice.

DEVELOPMENT OF FLOW

  • Vinyasa yoga focuses on the posture to breath and emphasises that postures in all forms are impermanent.
  • It indicates the flowing style of asanas and the benefit of asana is attained through the flowing energy.
  • It helps creative people the most.
  • The main objective is to learn asana through flowing energy

Ashtanga yoga

SUN SALUTATIONS A-B

  • Both the versions of Sun Salutations, Surya Namaskara A and B, are considered to be an introduction to every practice.
  • Practiced in the beginning for 5 times, they help in intense energy building, as well as breath and movement tuning practice.
  • Typically, for Asthanga style, Uddayi breathing is practiced, synchronized with flowing movement, from pose to pose.
  • This helps in stabilizing oneself, self-centering and balances the mind.

PRIMARY SERIES

  • This is a fixed sequence of 51 asanas, practiced after completing and mastering the Sun Salutation series.
  • It consists of standing, seated and finishing sequence. Every asana is to be held for a count of 5 Uddayi breaths.
  • This practice maintains its flow by repeated Vinyasas – transitions from pose to pose based on Surya Namaskara A.
  • Due to this, the intensity of the practice, energy remains relatively high.
  • It serves the therapeutic purpose of curing the body of any imbalances, ailments, as well as prepares it for practicing more advanced series of Ashtanga yoga.

ART OF ADJUSTMENT IN ASHTANGA YOGA

  • Learning proper alignment is the key to safe and effective Ashtanga practice.
  • Owing to appropriate adjustments, students learn how to maintain their practice while consuming the least energy.
  • This leads to greater benefits and increased therapeutic effects of the practice.

Meditation Technique

MEDITATION BASED ON OSHO

  • Osho, one of the greatest masters, introduced various meditation techniques, including, kundalini mediation, dance meditation, nadbrahma meditation, dynamic meditation, and whirling mediation.
  • These techniques uniquely match with our day to day yoga schedule and bring harmony to the body, mind and soul.
  • Through this, one learns the dynamic meditation techniques which are helpful in emotional and mental catharsis.

MEDITATION BASED ON DIFFERENT TRADITIONS

  • Meditation based on patanjaliyoga sutra, gherand samhita and vigyan bhairav tantra are are taught during classes.
  • These techniques lead to various kinds of emotions and psychological changes, promoting peace, harmony and joy.

PREPARATIONS FOR A CLASS

  • Preparation for a class requires many important aspects, like, students, time management and atmosphere.

CLASS FORMATION

  • Different formation brings with it different levels of energy.

  • Class formation also requires a proper setup of yoga hall, well equipped with bolsters, block, props, audio aid and other instruments.

PRINCIPLE OF DEMONSTRATION

  • Students will learn the important principles of demonstrating a technique (asana, pranayama, meditation, mantra) in a class.
  • Things like angles of demonstration, safety, balancing amongst demonstrating, verbal instructions, adjusting etc., will be emphasised.
  • Students will first practice in smaller groups and then in front of the entire group.

PRINCIPLE OF ADJUSTMENT

  • Hand-on adjustment is quite an essential skill for a Yoga teacher.
  • Students, in this course, will learn the various principles of adjusting, like, when or when not to adjust, safety of the student, safety of the teacher, overall alignment patterns that should be respected in each pose with their adjustments, use of props, etc.
  • Adjustments and maintaining the balance among adjustments, observation, demonstrating, and verbal instructions are explained.
  • Adjustment for each asana will be taught in the Training, Techniques, and Practice modules as well.

PRINCIPLE OF INSTRUCTIONS

  • Speaking, especially in front of a group, does not come naturally to everyone, which is why the students will practice this a lot, even by simply standing in front of a group.
  • Students will be having many practice sessions which will help them in finding their authentic voice.
  • Students will learn principles of verbal instruction, such as, length of sentences, rhythm, information load, humour, theming a class, maintaining the balance between verbal instruction and other functions.
  • This will help them in instructing their students adequately and in guiding them through different practices during a class.

SAFETY PARAMETERS

  • Yoga, nowadays, is becoming more competitive and demonstration oriented, making it even more important to conduct classes in safe environment.
  • Discussion regarding various ideas and facts about safety parameters will take place during these classes.
  • Creating a safe environment is of utmost importance in yoga.

YOGA IN THE MODERN WORLD

  • Students will be presented with different business modules for teaching Yoga and common pitfalls will be shared.
  • The organisation and the role of the Yoga Alliance will be explained and students will be encouraged to register and look into the benefits of being a member.

PRINCIPLE OF OBSERVATION

  • Observing students during a class is the most important skill of a teacher.
  • Usually teachers, in the beginning, have their own demonstration and verbal cuing, and forget about the class.
  • To avoid mistakes, the students learn about the important principles while observing the fellow students and even the class as a whole.
  • Observing everything, from how students enter the class to how they present themselves (body language), and even the questions they ask is emphasised.
  • A student’s muscle tone, little tricks to check alignment in a glance, how is the rhythm and depth of breathing etc. is also to be observed.
  • Observation, and maintaining a balance between observing and demonstrating while giving verbal instructions and other activities, will be taught here.
  • Students will first be practicing amongst a small group and then in bigger groups.
  • This helps in understanding what to expect from a class and the students.

AUDIO, VISUALS, CHARTS AND OTHER AIDS

  • Audio, visual graphics, charts and other aids can be the key sources for teaching.
  • Using these aids is an art which can be mastered through these classes.

Anatomy

SYSTEMS OF THE BODY

  • Basic structures that humans consist of will be introduced.
  • Organisation from the smallest units of the body cells into different tissues and systems will be discussed.
  • Students will learn to define a homeostasis and the role of the system of maintaining it.
  • Through this, they will understand the role of basic structures of the body.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

  • The students are given a description of different digestive organs and their functions.
  • Characteristics of different types of foods and the role of particular organs and digestive enzymes in processing food are also explained.
  • Role of balanced diet in the context of health and general well-being and analysis and selection of the digestion-supportive asanas are understood in great detail.
  • Understanding a digestion process and the functions, along with adjusting the asana practice while focusing on digestive system, choosing appropriate poses is the main objective.

MUSCULAR SYSTEMS AND MUSCLE MOVEMENT DURING ASANAS

  • The differences in structures and functions of different muscular tissues will be explained.
  • Examples of different types of muscles works (contraction, streching) and its usage in yoga asana practice will be understood.
  • Students will be learning and understand practically about 50 basic muscles of the body with a focus on their role in various poses.
  • This will enable to implement their knowledge of muscles and work in order to improve asana practice and also find the most aligned, safe and efficient way of performing poses.

BONES AND JOINTS AND THEIR MOVEMENT DURING ASANAS

  • The various types of skeleton structures are introduced.
  • Definitions and descriptions of bones and joints of different kinds are given.
  • Skeletal division into axial and appendicular with its characteristics are explained.
  • The practical part of finding learned structure in the body and the movements and planes in which the movement takes place with its reference to the asana practice are also understood.
  • This helps in recognizing different types of the body movements and naming the structures that participate in it and it also helps in learning a clear way of instructing, improving teaching skills.

NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • Characteristics of the nervous system, its structures and their essential coordinative role in the functioning of all the systems of the body are introduced.
  • Students will be understanding the division of somatic and autonomic nervous systems, with a strong emphasis on the understanding of self-regulating role of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system.
  • Discussion on adjusting the yoga practice for different purposes – stimulating/calming – with reference to the previous understanding of two branches of nervous system will also take place during the classes.
  • Definition and practical experiencing of reflex arc mechanism will also be understood.
  • The knowledge and understanding of the roles of different parts of nervous system becomes more refined and the ability of practical recognition of autonomic system activation and manifestation is polished.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS

  • This helps in understanding the organisation and role of the respiratory tract in the human body.
  • The volumes and capacities of the lungs and their characteristics are understood.
  • The function of inhalation and exhalation, differences with presentation of the structures involved, physiology of the breath and its relevance for yogic practices., yogic definition of breath and its benefits, physiological effects of exercise on respiratory system are all explained in great detail to the students.
  • The enables in implementing the knowledge of the organisation of the respiratory system and its work into asana practice, while attaining its objective of providing enough prana through the process of oxygenation.

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

  • The characteristics of endocrine glands and their excretory functions are explained in great detail.
  • Interrelated work of different hormones and their cooperation are understood by the students.
  • The students are given a comparative description of the chakra system and endocrine system, according to the present knowledge and the importance of linking energy and matter theories in the yoga studies is explained.
  • This leads to a more extensive knowledge of the physiology of endocrine system in a reference to yogic practices.

REPRODUCTIVE AND URINARY SYSTEM

  • The students are explained the anatomic description of parts of reproductive/urinary systems with physiological understanding of differences between the sexes.
  • They are also taught finding the sets of asanas which are beneficial to those systems, along with a short introduction to prenatal and postnatal yoga practice.

  • In this session, the basics of the texts, to form the foundation of yogic philosophy, will be understood.

INTRODUCTION TO PATANJALI

  • Patanjali is considered to be the Einstein for yogic philosophy. He delivered the most important scripture, Patanjal Yoga Sutra, which is considered to be the most authentic yoga scripture in the modern world.
  • Students will be introduced to Patanjal Yoga Sutra.

THEORY OF PANCA KOSHA

  • According to Veda, our being as five different layers. For a complete health, through this session, one will understand and learn about the five layers.

YAMA AND NIYAMA

  • Yama and niyama are the basis of asthanga yoga.
  • Patanjali considered yama and niyama to be the most important in the practice of yoga.

SATTVA, RAJAS AND TAMAS

  • Sattva, rajas and tamas are the three gunas which form the entire universe. For understanding the nature of the three gunas and how one can use the concept in the day-to-day life can be a very interesting discussion.

ETHICS AND MORAL

  • Ethics and morals of yoga should be integrated in the day to day life.
  • Yoga is a lifestyle and through this session, we will learn how age-old principle of yoga can be useful and implemented in the everyday life.

ASANA - TRADITIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC VIEW

  • Asana means posture, and understanding about posture in scientific and tradition terms brings clarity in the mind as in modern world there are lots asana styles and students tend to confuse between different yoga styles.
  • Discussion of the scientific point of view of asana helps to understand the three brains and strengthens the nervous system through asana only.

PRANAMAYA - TRADITIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC VIEW

  • The word, “Pranayama”, comes from two words “prana”, meaning life force and “ayama”, meaning rhythm.
  • To establish the rhythm of life force is called pranayama.
  • Breathing is a powerful tool for establishing the rhythm. Through this session, one will learn and understand the many facts about sacred breath.

YOGA AND ITS ORIGIN

  • Understanding the true nature of yoga is very important. Yoga is a union of body, mind and sou. Through the discussions on different definitions by scriptures about yoga, the students will be learning the various origins that leads to the roots of yoga in bhagavadgita, patanjal yoga sutra and gorakhsamhita.

  • Diet is a very important part of yoga practice and an understanding of yogic, ayurvedic and modern diet can bring a significant change in the person’s physical, physiological and psychological qualities.

EXISTENTIAL DISORDERS AND PATANJALI

  • Every disease has a deep root which is called as klesa.
  • Patanjali described five klesas, which eventually turn in cittavritti, which then turns into obstacles and disease. One can stop this progression with the help of yoga.
  • In the classes, one will understand the nature of diseases and how to stop them.

MEDITATION AND IT'S BASICS

  • One will learn to understand the basics of meditation and also the useful techniques of meditation.
